Nigeria Loses Investment To Fashion Industry Neglect –Group

A group known as The Strategists, have urged government to pay more attention to the fashion and fabrics industry.
According to them, the industry is capable of bridging the unemployment gap currently witnessed in most parts of the country today.
Speaking in Lagos on Thursday during an interactive session with journalists ahead of a fashion show on Sunday to promote Ankara, an indigenous fabric, the group explained that the country was losing so much money by not paying proper attention to the Nigerian fashion industry, which is one of the biggest and most competitive in the world.
Nkem Bamgbose, a member of the group, said, “Nigeria is losing so much money by not paying attention to the fashion industry. We are ignoring a goldmine, something that can become a cash cow for us if government and corporate organisations invest into the industry. The industry can employ a lot of our youths and graduates with the right kind of attention; it can become a huge income earner for the economy and we think government should look into this because there is so much money in it.
“People take our fabrics to other countries because the hunger for our design is very high. The industry in Nigeria is a very competitive market and one of the best in the world. There is no major show today in the world that you won’t see something from Nigeria being on display and that is why we have come up with this Ankara fashion show to encourage more people to embrace our local fabrics and designs.”
